University open as normal today (Thursday 0700)

The University of Bath will be open as normal on Thursday 24 January.

There has been minor snowfall overnight.  Roads are clear and the bus companies are running a normal service. Estates staff are currently on site clearing the modest amount of overnight snow and by 0900 it is expected that car parks will be useable. However, the effect of thawing snow and some sleet yesterday evening complicates the task and care remains necessary until temperatures rise, which is forecast for this weekend.

All examinations for the remainder of this week have been put back by 30 minutes from their originally-scheduled start-times (e.g. 9.30am exams to 10am, 1pm to 1.30pm and 4.30pm to 5pm).

Some surfaces remain slippery/ icy. Staff, students and visitors are advised to take great care when using paths and car parks on campus. Please be alert for slippery, wet floor surfaces in the entrances to buildings.

Staff should make every possible effort to attend work in the interests of maintaining a normal service. Those reliant on public transport should use the first available service if there are early morning cancellations.

The University’s guidance on staff attendance during severe weather conditions is available online.  Staff who are able to work from home are able to do so with their manager’s permission; staff will otherwise need to take unpaid or annual leave.

The University takes the health and safety of its students very seriously and as such has taken and will continue to take additional action as and where necessary to make the campus as safe as is reasonably possible.  For as long as snow/ ice remains on campus, all students and staff are reminded to take care when moving around on campus and to stick to cleared roads and pathways.  Sensible footwear and warm clothing is recommended.

No further snow is forecast this week.  There will therefore not be further announcements except in the event of further adverse weather.  In the event of adverse weather overnight an announcement is posted on the University website by 7.30am. If you do not have internet access at home and are dependent on the University’s severe weather helpline (a recorded message) please ensure you have noted the telephone number for future reference, which is 01225 383200.

The Emergency Management Team would like to thank all staff and students for bearing with us through this period of significant adverse weather.

Rescheduled examinations

As previously communicated, the University is actively considering all possible options for new dates for those examinations which have been postponed from 18 and 22 January.  Rescheduled arrangements will be announced to all students not later than tomorrow (Friday).  Rescheduled exams will not be before 4 February.
