The following items were discussed at the recent meeting of Council:

Following a presentation by Les Ebdon, Director of the Office for Fair Access, and a discussion with him, the following items were discussed at the recent meeting of Council:
Research Excellence Framework: Council received a presentation from Professor Jane Millar, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), on the key issues in relation to the Research Excellence Framework.
Corporate Performance Targets: Council considered and noted the overall positive progress towards the seventeen corporate performance targets under four key thematic areas (Research, Learning and Teaching, Enterprise and Innovation and International Profile).
Revised Forecasts 12/13: Council approved the revised forecasts for 2012/13.
Thornbank Gardens: Council approved the refurbishment of Thornbank Gardens with a budget of £1.6m.
External Auditor: Council re-appointed KPMG as the University’s External Auditor for 2012/13.
Pro-Chancellor: Council recommended to Court that Mr Peter Troughton be appointed as Pro-Chancellor for the period of 1st August 2013 to 31st July 2016.  This recommendation was approved by Court on 12th March 2013.
Staff Survey: Council received and noted an update on the Staff Survey 2011 and 2013;
Appointments: Council approved the following appointments:
Dean
Professor Veronica Hope Hailey, Dean and Head of the School of Management, for five years from 1st August 2013 to 31st July 2018;
Heads of Department
a) from 1st August 2013 to 31st July 2016:
Faculty of Engineering and Design
Professor Pete Walker - Architecture and Civil Engineering
Dr Tim Mays - Chemical Engineering
Faculty of Science
Professor Roderick Scott - Biology and Biochemistry
Dr Eamonn O’Neill - Computer Science
Professor Stephen Ward - Pharmacy and Pharmacology
Professor Simon Bending - Physics
b) from 1st April 2013 to 31st July 2016:
Faculty of Engineering and Design - Dr Adrian Evans Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Senate: 6 February 2013

The following items were discussed at the recent meeting of Senate:

Appointment of Chancellor: The Vice-Chancellor was delighted to report that the Committee on the Office of Chancellor would be recommending to Court on 12th March 2013 that His Royal Highness the Earl of Wessex be appointed as the University's next Chancellor.  Senate welcomed this positive development for the University and recorded its appreciation of the fourteen years of sterling service given by Lord Tugendhat to the University.
Corporate Performance Targets: Senate considered and noted the overall positive progress towards the seventeen corporate performance targets under four key thematic areas (Research, Learning and Teaching, Enterprise and Innovation and International Profile).
Chancellor's Medal: Senate approved the award of the Chancellor's Medal 2012 to Mr Keith Woodley, Pro-Chancellor.
Conferment of Title: Senate conferred the following titles:
Emeritus Professor - Professor R Marsh and Professor W Brooks, Department of Politics, Languages and International Studies
Honorary Professor - Mr Martin Sykes and Mr Duncan Eaton

The Senate is responsible for regulating and directing the academic work of the University and is regarded as the supreme academic authority of the University. Read more
