Architects and contractors joined University staff on the roof of the new GTA building last week to celebrate the ‘topping out’ of the building.
The ceremony marks the moment the highest point of the building has been reached.
With the steel frame complete and the final delivery of concrete imminent, the structure is moving on rapidly. Fitting out the interior has already started with the twin 350 seat lecture theatres taking shape and the large atrium providing a dramatic sense of light and openness. The upper floors of the building now offer sweeping views stretching as far as Salisbury Plain.
The origin of the tradition of ‘topping out’ is obscure but it is thought to be an ancient practice brought to Britain by Scandinavian invaders who would place a tree over a new building to appease the tree-dwelling spirits who had been displaced.
Martyn Whalley, Director of Estates, said: “It is wonderful to be up here enjoying the sunshine, with this opportunity to thank everyone for all their hard efforts so far. The project is progressing very well and it’s full credit to the dedication and energy of the teams involved. We’re on track and already looking forward to the building opening in September as planned.”
