Economics student wins First Year of the Year Award

Bath student Joe Peissel has been named ‘First Year of the Year’ in the TARGETJobs Undergraduate of the Year Award.

The Economics student was handed his prize by veteran broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald at a recent ceremony in London.

His prize, which was sponsored by Ernst & Young, is a place on the company’s 11-week Global Student Experience Programme, including a week in Florida.

Four other University of Bath students also made it through the award finals. They were Liam Bryant and Anne-Marie Ratclifee – both studying Architectural & Civil Engineering – who were shortlisted for Construction Engineering & Design Undergraduate of the Year, sponsored by Laing O’Rourke, while Civil Engineering student Sorella Smith was also shortlisted for First Year of the Year.

Joe impressed judges by shining in a series of online tests, application forms, interviews and assessment exercises.

His award was one of twelve presented on the day and each award was sponsored by a top graduate recruiter, including Barclays, Mars, Ernst & Young, Laing O’Rourke, E.ON, EDF Energy, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Marks & Spencer, Gazprom, Nestle, Rolls-Royce and Mayer Brown.

The awards are run in association with SHL, a specialist in helping graduate recruiters identify top talent, and SHL worked closely with all of the employers sponsoring the awards to devise assessment processes that would prioritise their key skills and competencies. The winners are the closest fit possible for the culture and work of the sponsoring employers.
