Professor Butler Acting Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences

Professor Ian Butler, the current Head of the Department of Social and Policy Sciences, has been appointed as the Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences on an acting basis for the period of one year. This follows a final selection process which did not result in an appointment being made.

Professor Butler will take up his post in August. He succeeds Professor Roger Eatwell who completes his term as Dean at the end of July.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, said: “I would like to thank Professor Roger Eatwell for so successfully leading the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences for the last five years, and Professor Butler for accepting my invitation to undertake the role.”

Professor Butler’s new post means there is a vacancy for the Head of the Department of Social and Policy Sciences. This position is currently being advertised with expressions of interest requested from eligible members of staff who wish to be considered.

Other appointments in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences include:

  • Dr Mary Hayden has been appointed as Head of the Department of Education from 1 August 2013 for two years.
  • Professor Bas Verplanken has been reappointed as Head of the Department of Psychology for three years from 1 August 2013.
  • The three Associate Deans (Dr Peter Lambert, Professor Danae Stanton Fraser and Professor Stephen Gough) have had their term of office extended for six months until 31 January 2014.
