A new place to meet and eat – the Fountain Canteen

Fountain CanteenA new eatery on campus, offering a relaxed modern approach with soft social areas and a dedicated games area will be open for staff and students from Freshers’ Week this year. There will be a wide variety of food at low prices with meals starting at £2.00 and no single meal exceeding £4.95.

The Fountain Canteen is the ‘Level 1’ food court refurbished. It’s the canteen next to the fountain it takes its name from - next to University Hall.

On offer is ‘Little Italy’ - an area for ice cream, coffee and pastries, Cosmo Pizza, the Health Deli which is all vegetarian and also serves dairy and gluten free food, a Juice Bar, Hot Wok – a Chinese counter, Salsa – traditional dishes from around the world, Pasta Pronto and Old El Paso – a Mexican food stand.

The canteen will also be used for summer schools and conferences during the summer vacation.

The opening, to officially launch the canteen, was attended by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell who took a look around the eateries and tested out the gaming area.

Jane Loveys, Director of Accommodation and Hospitality commented: “We were aware that there was a demand for more healthy and vegetarian options, but also that Level 1 was not a modern environment to just chill out and socialise. We hope that with the new gaming area, relaxing furniture and affordable pricing, the new Fountain Canteen will be a place that students and staff choose to spend time in.”

Chris Clements, Student Union President added: “It is great to see some of the changes students have asked for come to fruition. The new salad and smoothie bar, vegetarian options, later opening hours and the new feel of the canteen are great changes and really enhance the range of food and drink available on campus.”
