People came together at last month’s Physics Research Day to celebrate the world-class research taking place in our Department of Physics.
The event – the first of its kind at the department – attracted a wide range of staff and students from across the University, as well as researchers from GW4 universities and prospective students.
Professor Jonathan Knight, Head of Department, said: “The Physics Research Day is an opportunity to be more outward-looking.
“It’s not just a chance to let people know about the work we do here it’s a chance to bounce ideas off colleagues and to identify areas for collaborative working in the future.”
The morning session covered the department’s main areas of research – condensed matter, photonics and nanoscience – as well as the work of the Centre for space, atmospheric and oceanic science and the recently launched Centre for networks and collective behaviour.
The afternoon sessions took a closer look at the work of individual researchers and there was a chance to tour the photonics and graphene laboratories.
The day closed with a talk on single photons by Dr Peter Mosley, the event organiser.
Dr Mosley said: “I’ve received very positive feedback on the research day, not just from colleagues at the University but also from those who attended from the other universities in the GW4 group.
“It’s great to see the level of interest and enthusiasm for our research, and I’m sure many exciting opportunities have been identified as a result.”
