The next Science Café on Monday 8 July will explore what happens to waste materials that are left over after recyclable items are removed.
Sarah Stanton from Rewaste Ltd will start her presentation at the point where her journey began three years ago.
Sarah was aghast at the sheer number of dirty nappies that piled up in her rubbish bin heading off for landfill, and got to thinking about alternative ways to dispose of them.
Sarah started to explore what options already existed worldwide for the waste management of nappies, and why, at that time, there was nothing in the UK targeting this enormous waste stream.
On her journey Sarah came across aerobic composting and anaerobic digestion, as well as meeting another interested party who subsequently became her business partner in setting up Rewaste Ltd.
In her presentation, Sarah will share her learning about the MRFs (Material Recovery Facilities) that are used for residual waste (rubbish left over after source segregation of recyclables) and the advanced techniques that can be used in these types of plants to optimise their effectiveness in extracting quality recyclable outputs.
