Dear colleague,
Firstly, thank you to all who took part in this year’s Staff Survey.
Over 1,853 of you participated – 68% of all staff. Your input has created a comprehensive picture of what you feel it is like to work here.
I’m pleased to say that overall your views are very positive, with 93% of you agreeing that the University is a good place to work.
This demonstrates that the hard work put in by colleagues across our community since the 2011 survey appears to be having a positive effect.
Further work will continue on two themes identified as University-wide strategic priorities; ‘managing change’, led by Ian Cheetham, Director of Human Resources, and ‘communications’, led by Tim Kaner, Director of Marketing & Communications.
Ian will also lead work to further investigate the views expressed on the pay and benefits offered by the University. Initially this will involve analysing the comments made in the survey about what improvements could be made.
Another important part of the picture is what the survey tells us about how you view working in your department. I have asked each Head of Department to share the relevant departmental findings with you. This is intended to be an opportunity for you to discuss the results with your colleagues to recognise where things are going well, to explore any areas of concern and to work together on possible solutions.
If you would like to see more detail about the findings, please visit the staff survey website.
I believe these results both confirm that we are making good progress and that there is still more to do. I look forward hearing your ideas about how to make our University an even more inspiring and satisfying community in which to work.
Thank you,

Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell DBE DL
Vice-Chancellor
