The University’s successful Year 11 Summer School commences again this week as forty-five pupils get the opportunity to experience a taste of university life and study.
Pupils will stay on campus from 23 to 26 July and their introduction to life as a university student will include a range of academic taster sessions and a chance to complete an extended academic project in a subject of their choice from biology, computer science, engineering and social sciences.
The taster sessions will include mini-lectures, discussions and problem-solving tasks in a range of subjects including languages, sociology, sports science and maths.
The extended project will allow pupils to explore their chosen subjects in greater depth and create a presentation for an exhibition of their efforts at the end of the week.
The young people will also receive information and guidance on topics such as choosing the right university course, applying to Higher Education and student finance.
They will stay in student accommodation on campus alongside trained undergraduate student ambassadors who will be on hand all week to offer pastoral support and answer any questions about university life.
In addition to the academic sessions, pupils will be able to experience the wide array of excellent facilities available at the University including sessions in the Sports Training Village and Students’ Union. The pupils will enjoy social activities each evening aimed at helping them make new friends and get a glimpse of the exciting opportunities on offer at the University.
Annette Hayton, Head of Widening Participation, said: “The Summer School is a joint initiative with the Universities of Exeter and Bristol and we are pleased to be working with them to support students across the South West. We are looking forward to welcoming students and helping them to develop their knowledge of Higher Education and the university application process.”
Stefanie Hurrell, Widening Participation Outreach Officer, added: “We hope that the students attending the Summer School will benefit from the opportunities on offer to them and will go home with a better understanding of what it means to live and study at a top university.”
The Year 11 Summer School is part of the University’s Widening Participation strategy. The pupils attending the Summer School have been identified as excelling academically and all have the potential and ability to be accepted at a selective university like Bath. The Summer School will boost the pupil’s confidence and increase their understanding of Higher Education.
The Year 11 Summer School is one of an increasing number of initiatives the Widening Participation Office is offering to local schools and colleges and is one of three summer schools being supported by the department this year.
