University of Bath ranked top in UK for student satisfaction

Bath students are the most satisfied university students in the UK – according to figures released by the 2013 National Student Survey (NSS).

The results of the annual survey published today (Tuesday 13 August) reveal that the overall satisfaction rate for Bath students is at an all-time high of 94 per cent.

That is a massive nine points above the UK national average for HEIs (higher education institutions) of 85 per cent, and puts us top in the national table of over 130 universities in terms of student satisfaction (excluding small and specialist HEIs).

Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath, said: “This is fantastic news and reflects the students’ view of the unique combination of high quality teaching, excellent support services and a close-knit campus community we offer them.

“We aim to ensure our graduates are classic all-rounders - of the highest intellectual calibre as well as being accomplished in other spheres of life - competitive sports, the arts and any other field of endeavour they choose to pursue.

“Our outstanding facilities, coupled with the professionalism and accessibility of all our staff and services gives our students the opportunity to thrive.

“This achievement is testament to the hard work, passion and commitment of all our staff.”

Other highlights of the NSS 2013 results for the University of Bath include:

  • Our students ranking their Students’ Union as fourth best of any university in the UK.
  • Being ranked first in the UK for student satisfaction in three subject tables: Mechanical Engineering (97 per cent satisfaction); Aerospace Engineering (96 per cent satisfaction); and Business Studies (98 per cent satisfaction).
  • Achieving an increase in score for 20 out of 21 of the questions students were asked compared to last year.
  • Achieving a much higher than average response to the optional question “It is clear how students’ comments on the course have been acted upon”. Our response rate was up by seven points on last year and 19 points above the HEI average clearly demonstrating we listen to our students and act on feedback.

Ellie Hynes, Students’ Union President, said: “This is a brilliant start to the new academic year. For our Students’ Union to be viewed as one of the best in the country is a great result and a deserved reflection on the efforts of our students.

"Our students recognise the strong culture of collaboration here and how we work in partnership with the University to improve the student experience.”

The NSS, now entering its ninth year, provides all final year undergraduate students in UK higher education institutions and further education colleges with the opportunity to express their opinions on what they liked during their time at university.

Around 304,000 final-year students responded to the NSS survey this year from 154 HEIs and 165 FECs (further education colleges) from across the UK. This represents a response rate of 68.6 per cent, the highest rate in the nine years that the NSS has been running.

The results of the national survey provide valuable information for prospective students, and help universities, colleges and students’ unions to further improve the education and services they provide.
