We have been notified by the University and College Union (UCU), UNISON and Unite that their members at the University of Bath will be taking strike action on Tuesday 3 December 2013 in support of their dispute about the 2013 national pay claim.
We will be taking all possible steps to minimise the impact of industrial action on the University’s activities.
It is regrettable that the Trade Unions have decided to take this action because of the potential for disruption to the University’s activities.
The trade unions will advise their members that they do not need to inform employers if they will be participating in strike action, but will advise members to inform their employers after the event when asked.
If you participate in strike action on this day you are asked to inform your Head of Department by Friday 6 December 2013.
Members of staff who decide to take strike action will be considered to be in breach of their contract of employment and the University will withhold 1/260th of their annual salary for each day of strike action.
It is anticipated that there will be pickets at the University entrances on Tuesday 3 December 2013. In the past some staff have expressed concern about crossing picket lines.
The purposes of picketing are to peacefully obtain and communicate information and persuade a person to work or not to work. There should not be more than six official pickets at any entrance. A person who decides to cross a picket line must be allowed to do so.
If staff decide not to cross picket lines they will also be treated as taking strike action and have pay withheld and will also be required to notify their Head of Department by Friday 6 December 2013.
The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) and Heads of Department will ensure that the potential impact of the industrial action is communicated to our students.
