New book offers an inspirational teaching guide

Innovative teaching in the UK’s universities is highlighted in a new book, which draws on the expertise and experience of outstanding university teachers across the UK.

For the Love of Learning brings together 36 essays from National Teaching Fellows selected to inspire university staff to explore and experiment with new opportunities in their teaching.

Edited by Tim Bilham, from the Department for Health, it is the first book entirely written by National Teaching Fellows. Tim achieved his NTF award in 2007.

The book covers many of the most topical areas of learning and teaching in higher education, including transitions, cross-disciplinary teaching, assessment, internationalisation, innovation in teaching, employability, enterprise and student engagement.

Contributions range across many disciplines, including the visual arts, science, music, health and social care, technology, management and education. They share a common focus on the student and on student learning. In some cases students have directly contributed.

Tim said: “University teachers have a profound responsibility for the learning experiences of their students. Through a uniquely powerful collection of essays from outstanding National Teaching Fellows, this book presents cutting edge examples of inspirational learning and teaching covering the most important topics in higher education today and highlights teachers who have brought innovative, creative and novel approaches to these key issues.”

The book is one of the first published by Palgrave Macmillan in their new Teaching and Learning Series. The foreword is written by the recently appointed Chief Executive of the Higher Education Academy, Professor Stephanie Marshall.

It is designed for  university teachers and learning support staff, course and programme leaders, staff developers, quality assurance staff, change agents, leaders and senior managers in the UK and internationally. It is also relevant to staff in further education institutions where HE is taught, and students training to be teachers in other contexts.

For the Love of Learning: Innovations from Outstanding University Teachers was one of Palgrave’s books of the month in November and will be launched in North America and Australia on 18 December. It is available from Palgrave MacMillan.
