Update from Council - 22 May 2014

The following issues were discussed at the recent meeting of Council.

  • Research - The second of a series of research presentations was made, this time by Professor Gary Lock on ‘Keeping cool under pressure’ about his work with aeroplane components for jet engines and by Professor Dimo Dimov on ‘Entrepreneurship as an open-ended Journey’.
  • The Vice-Chancellor gave a report on key issues for the University, including revisions to HEFCE’s financial memorandum, development of international collaborations and several recent very positive league table results.
  • The refreshed document on ‘Career progression in the Education & Research job family’ was approved, as recommended by Senate.
  • Students’ Union – The President of the Students’ Union, Ellie Hynes, gave a report on the impact of the Union over the last year. The Chair of Council thanked her and Peter Hachfeld for their excellent work on behalf of the students. Council also approved some amendments to the Students’ Union Articles of Governance, Code of Practice and University Ordinances which arose from the recent quinquennial review of Students’ Union governance.
  • Building developments – Council were given an update on progress on the new Quads accommodation, Lime Tree restaurant, Centre for the Arts and other projects.
  • Nominations Committee – Council approved several recommendations relating to membership of Council and other Committees, including the re-appointment of Michael Hipkins and Raoul Hughes for a further term as lay members of Council.
