Update from Council - 10 July 2014

The following issues were discussed at yesterday’s meeting of Council:

  • Research - A series of research presentations was made by three Prize Fellows: by Matt Dickson (on Grammar Schools and Inequality), Stephanie Diezmann (‘Why do fungi make people sick?’) and Valeska Ting (on Sustainable Energy).
  • The Vice-Chancellor gave a report on key issues for the University, including the recent successful June Open Day, which attracted around 12,000 visitors, and current government consultations such as the use of metrics in assessing research excellence.
  • Finance – Council approved the budget for 2014/15, and for the next three years to 2017/18, as well as the Financial Forecasts and commentary required for submission to HEFCE. It approved the annual payment of fees to the University’s External Auditor. It also noted HEFCE’s new Memorandum of Assurance and Accountability and funding agreement, which did not result in any significant changes for the University.
  • Risk Management – Council approved the new Risk Register and Risk Management Plan 2014.
  • Building developments – Council were given an update on capital projects.
  • Equality & Diversity – Council noted the equality and diversity student monitoring data for 2012/13.
  • Staff Survey – Council noted the actions resulting from the 2013 staff survey and agreed that further consideration should be given to the timing and methods for re-surveying staff.
  • Staffing – Council reappointed Professor Jane Millar as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) for a further year from 1 August 2014.
  • Nominations Committee – Council approved the appointment of Mr Barry Gilbertson as a new lay member of Council from 1 August 2014 for three years.
  • Chair of Council – this was the last meeting chaired by Mr Peter Troughton. Council thanked him for his dedicated service to the University over the past eight and a half years. He would remain on Council as one of the three Pro-Chancellors.
