Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa

We wanted to inform staff that we have been monitoring actively the recent Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa.  The risk of Ebola arriving in the UK is very low.  The University is following the advice issued by Public Health England which is available online as a PDF

In accordance with that advice, vigilance for symptoms and good hygiene are the only recommended steps, as for other potentially-serious infectious conditions.

The University has procedures in place for communicable diseases under which any cases or suspected cases of Ebola will be managed should the necessity arise.

This is a convenient opportunity to draw attention to the University’s Policy for International Travel which provides that travel against Foreign & Commonwealth Office advice requires the approval of the University Secretary.  Accordingly, staff or students wishing to travel to certain West African countries need to follow the provisions of this policy.
