Update from Council - 26 February 2015

The following issues were discussed at last week's meeting of University Council:          

New member: Council welcomed Ms Claire Marr, the recently elected representative from non-academic staff until 31 July 2015.

Professor David Galbreath and Mr Mark Humphriss gave a presentation on Counter-Terrorism and the potential implications for universities of the new Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 which recently received royal assent; final guidance from government is awaited.

The Vice-Chancellor gave a report on key issues for the University and achievements of staff and others associated with the University; Council congratulated lay member Mr Roger Whorrod on his OBE in the New Year honours.

Staff: Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Provost: Professor Bernie Morley was appointed with effect from 1 May 2015 for five years as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost to follow the upcoming retirement of Professor Kevin Edge. It was noted that Mr Steve Egan had been appointed Vice-President (Implementation) with effect from 1 May 2015.

Research Excellence Framework (REF): Professor Jane Millar, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), gave a presentation outlining the University’s achievements in the REF. Council noted the excellent results and congratulated all those involved.

Research Institute: Council approved the establishment of the new Bath Institute for Mathematical Innovation to be led by Professor Tony Dooley and Professor Jonathan Dawes.

Marketing: Council received an update on marketing activity across the University from Mr Tim Kaner, Director of Marketing & Communications.

International Strategy: Council approved the International Strategy presented by Professor Colin Grant, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Internationalisation).

Student Applications: Council noted the very successful admissions cycle for 2014 and that undergraduate applications for 2015 were also buoyant.

Financial reports: Council approved the revised financial forecast for 2014/15.

External Auditor: Council approved the re-appointment of KPMG as external auditors for the University’s 2014/15 audit.

Health and Safety: Council noted the annual report of the Health, Safety and Environment Service and approved the reviewed Statement of Intent.

Ordinances: Council approved a minor amendment to Ordinance 14.15 to include the new Doctorate in Policy Research and Practice.
