VC visits Fac of Science admin support staff

Her latest visit took the Vice-Chancellor on a tour behind the scenes of the Faculty of Science to talk to representatives of the admin support teams.

The Vice-Chancellor meets the Finance and Research Support team, including Ulrika Whitley, Finance Officer

First up was the Finance & Research Office where Laura Hiscox, Finance & Research Support Manager, and her team showed how they help the Faculty’s researchers and other staff. Eric Wing gave the Vice-Chancellor a small demo of Calpendo, software being trialled to book shared research facilities.

Dame Glynis congratulated the team: “Your support means a lot to academic staff. As a young researcher I was always thankful to my finance lead Carol for keeping everything on track.”

Just down the corridor was a chance to meet the brand new Faculty Marketing & Web Team who gave Dame Glynis their first impressions of the University. Simone Dumergue, Marketing & Communications Manager, in her third week, enthused about her welcome and when pushed to be at least a bit critical, did ask for a guide to all the acronyms.

The tour then moved on to meet Marguerite Hallett, Faculty Assistant Registrar, and Hannah Dennis, Undergraduate Manager, who explained new systems they had put in place to increase efficiency such as moving all key meeting documents to secure wikis, making them easier to access and saving on printing.

Simon Gane, Graduate School Manager, described how his team supports the postgraduate journey, running through a whiteboard of successes and challenges from a new paperless admissions system to last year’s 20 per cent rise in PG take-up rates.

Other members of the Faculty Office then joined the Vice-Chancellor in the Council Chamber for a presentation by Louise Oliver, Placements Manager, on the impressive breadth of opportunities and support they provide across the Faculty.

It was time for refreshments and being veterans of many cake sales, the Faculty provided possibly the most impressive array of cake on a VC visit to date, at the same time raising money for the Dogs & Cats Home and Dorothy House.

Amanda Harper, Director of Administration, said: “Thank you to the Vice-Chancellor for coming to visit us, and in front of her I would like to thank the Faculty staff for all the hard work they put in.”

Dame Glynis said: “You are an incredibly important part of the University and what makes the £60m engine-room of this faculty work.

“We did very well in the REF2014, but compared to the field we are now competing in, we are a third of their size. To take the next step, we have to grow, not just in student numbers but in our presence across the sector.

“I am looking to you to continue to be creative and identify those solutions and innovations that will help to get us there.”
