Update from Council – 21 May 2015

The following issues were discussed at last week's meeting of University Council:

Dr Jo Farrar, Chief Executive of Bath & North East Somerset Council, gave a presentation on the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and plans for developments in the Bath Riverside Enterprise Area.

The Vice-Chancellor gave a report on key issues for the University including implications of the general election outcome, recent league table results, the ongoing pay negotiations and achievements of staff.

Students’ Union: the Students’ Union President gave an update on progress against their Top Ten issues for the year.

StaffProfessor Jonathan Knight was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) with effect from 1st August 2015 for three years and Professor Peter Lambert was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching) with effect from 1st July 2015 for four years.
Council also approved the appointment of Mr Sam Sharpe as a new lay member of Council from 1st August 2015 for three years and appointed Mr Peter Wyman as Vice-Chair also from 1st August.

KPIs and Risk: Council noted an update on institutional performance along with the key performance indicators used and also approved minor amendments to the risk register.

Equality & Diversity: Student equality and diversity monitoring data were noted for 2013/14.

Finances: Council noted the half year accounts, which showed a positive financial position.

50th Anniversary: Council received a report from the Director of Development & Alumni Relations about plans for the 50th Anniversary.

Council Effectiveness: Council discussed a report on the recent interim Effectiveness Review of Council, which takes place every three years, and agreed some actions in line with the Committee of University Chairs’ revised Higher Education Code of Governance.
