Update from Council – 9 July 2015

The following issues were discussed at the Council meeting on 9 July 2015:          

Sport: Stephen Baddeley, Director of Sport, gave a presentation on the University’s excellent sports facilities and plans for the future.

Vice-Chancellor: The Vice-Chancellor gave a report on key issues for the University including the recent Budget and its implications for higher education, HEFCE’s consultation on quality assurance arrangements, the ongoing pay negotiations and recent achievements of staff.

Staff Survey: the Director of Human Resources presented an update on the actions taken as a result of the 2013 survey and Council noted that the next survey would be in 2016.

Risk: Council approved the Risk Register and Risk Management Plan 2015.

Finance: Council approved the 2014/15 financial forecast, estimates for 2015/16 and forecasts for the period up to 2019/20, as well as the financial forecasts required for submission to HEFCE. It approved funds to be spent on the refurbishment of the lower floors of Manvers Street and the annual payment of fees to the University’s External Auditor.

Building developments: Council was given an update on capital projects.

Research Integrity: Council approved the first Annual Statement on Research Integrity 2014/15 which shows compliance with UUK’s Concordat to Support Research Integrity, as recommended by Senate.

Research Misconduct Procedure: Council approved amendments to the Procedure for Inquiring into Allegations of Misconduct in Research and Scholarship, as recommended by Senate. The updated procedure is available online.

Intellectual Property Policy – Ordinance 22: Council approved some amendments to the Intellectual Property (IP) Policy, mostly regarding copyright, third-party owned materials and recording of lectures, as recommended by Senate. The amended policy is available online.

Athena SWAN: Council noted the Athena SWAN annual report.

Retiring members: On behalf of Council, the Chair thanked those members whose last meeting of Council this was: Stuart Appleton, Michael Carley and Joanna Bryson, and Professor Jane Millar in attendance as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research).
