Sharing our Fairtrade experiences with keen Kingswood pupils

Colleagues from Accommodation & Hospitality Services and Estates were recently invited to participate in Kingswood School's Life Skills Week and to share our experiences of being a Fairtrade university.

Su Steenberg (AHS) and Liz Rusell (Estates), alongside representatives from Amnesty International, Water Aid, BANES and SusTrans, spent the afternoon discussing a variety of ways to make the world a better place with Year 9 pupils.

Liz Rusell answers questions from Kindswood students

Liz said: "The students bombarded us with dozens of questions on the University's involvement with the Fairtrade Foundation and the activities and promotions we hold on campus in order to qualify for Fairtrade university status.

“We told them all about what we have done over the years during the annual Fairtrade Fortnight and showed photos of some of the events we have organised in collaboration with the Students' Union."

They also explained how we make use of and promote Fairtrade products throughout the year. For example, all the hot drinks we serve on campus are Fairtrade and our shops stock many Fairtrade foods and goods.

Su said: "It was really satisfying to hear that, after almost two hours of questions and armed with lots of freebies and pamphlets, the students are now seriously considering working toward Fairtrade accreditation for their own school.

“It was great to be able to share our knowledge and experience from here at the University to help spread the word about Fairtrade whilst building on our relationship with a local school.”
