Research partnership talks with USM

Last week we welcomed a delegation from one of Malaysia’s oldest Universities, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

The delegates, Professor Dato’ Dr Muhamad Jantan (Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research and Innovation) and Dr Azeem Fazwan Bin Abdul Farouk (Deputy Director, Centre for Policy Research and International Studies), were here to take part in our first Institute for Policy Research short course on transformational policy: What Role for Research?

Following the course, Professor Dato’ Dr Muhamad and Dr Azeem Fazwan were invited by Professor Colin Grant, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Internationalisation), to extend their time on campus to explore opportunities for research partnerships between our two universities.

The USM delegates were joined by Emeritus Professor Dato’ Dr Visweswaran Navaratnam (Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Postgraduate, Research & Strategic Development) of Taylor’s University, Malaysia, one of our strategic international education partners. As a Bath alumnus, current collaborator and a frequent visitor to the University, Professor Navaratnam helped to facilitate the discussions around a potential new partnership.

The delegation met with representatives from the faculties and School, as well as the Institute for Policy Research and International Relations Office.

Professor Colin Grant said: “This was a very valuable series of meetings which enabled us to share a number of mutually interesting areas of research.

“I enjoyed welcoming key members of USM to our campus and I am very much looking forward to further visits in the near future to develop a strong new partnership in the region.”
