Update from Senate - 14 Oct 2015

The following issues were discussed at the recent meeting of Senate:

Vice-Chancellor’s report: The Vice-Chancellor gave a report on key issues facing the University, including proposals for a new Quality Assessment Framework, some positive international league table results and the Students’ Union Top Ten issues.

New Academic Programmes: On the recommendation of the Programmes and Partnerships Approval Committee, Senate agreed to grant full and final approval to the following academic programmes:

  • MEng Hons Integrated Design Engineering
  • MEng Hons Integrated Design Engineering with professional placement
  • BEng Hons Integrated Design Engineering
  • BEng Hons Integrated Design Engineering with professional placement

New PGT exit awards:

  • PG Certificate Mechatronics
  • PG Certificate Automotive Engineering
  • PG Certificate Engineering Design

Designated Alternative Programmes for MSci Sport and Exercise Science:

  • BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science Studies
  • BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science Studies with Study Year Abroad
  • BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science Studies with Professional Placement
  • BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science Studies with Combined Professional Placement and Study Abroad

Senate also noted the approval by Chair’s Action over the summer of the following new academic programmes from September 2016:

  • MSc Low Carbon Design as a Designated Alternative Programme to MSc Modern Building Design
  • MA and PG Dip Translation With Business Interpreting (Chinese)
  • BSc (Hons) Physical Activity and Health
  • BSc (Hons) Physical Activity and Health with professional placement
  • MSci (Hons) Physical Activity and Health
  • MSci (Hons) Physical Activity and Health with professional placement
  • BSc (Hons) Physical Activity and Health Studies (Designated Alternative   Programme (DAP) only).
  • BSc (Hons) Physical Activity and Health Studies with professional placement (Designated Alternative Programme only)
  • MSci(Hons) Education in an International Context;
  • MSci(Hons) Education in an International Context with Professional Placement;
  • BSc(Hons) Education in an International Context;
  • BSc(Hons) Education in an International Context with Professional Placement.

Admissions 2015: Senate discussed the student intake figures and the challenges provided by increased numbers. The Vice-Chancellor thanked all the staff and student officers who had been involved in induction this autumn.

National Student Survey (NSS) 2015: Senate discussed the 2015 NSS results which were generally very positive. All departments were working with staff and students to produce and analyse results in Action Plans, which would feed into a wider University strategy.

Key Performance Indicators: Senate noted an update on its Key Performance Indicators which monitored the core academic activities of the University, benchmarked against similar universities.

Library: Senate noted the annual report from the Library.

Committee memberships: - Senate appointed:

  • Professor Nicholas Kinnie as Chair of the Programmes and Partnerships Approval Committee until 31 July 2018;
  • Dr James Bilzon to the Council of Designability.

Using vacation powers, the Vice-Chancellor had also appointed Dr Cassie Wilson to the University of Bristol Court until 31 July 2018.
