Bob Holman - obituary

Bob Holman receiving his honorary degree in 2001

The death has been announced of Bob Holman, Professor of Social Administration at the University from 1974 to 1976.

He is remembered with affection by longer-standing members of staff across the University.

Professor Graham Room shared his thoughts: "Bob stepped down from his Chair in order to work among disadvantaged communities, practising what he had hitherto taught.

"For several years that meant community work in Southdown, here in Bath, before he moved to the more challenging Easterhouse estate in Glasgow.

"From there he became a frequent commentator through the national media, on the widening gulf in our society between poverty and wealth: a voice to which politicians across the political spectrum listened with respect, even if they did not follow this up with action."

In 2001, the University awarded Bob an Honorary Doctorate of Laws. The oration by Professor Graham Room on that occasion provides a fuller account of a remarkable life and person. Read oration (click to enlarge text).
