Update from Senate - 5 Oct 2016

The following issues were discussed at the recent meeting of Senate on 5 October 2016.

Vice-Chancellor’s report: The Vice-Chancellor presented her report on key issues facing the University, including recent positive league table results.

Admissions: The Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Provost gave an initial indication of student intake figures. He thanked all the staff who had been involved in recruitment over the summer.

National Student Survey (NSS): Senate discussed the 2016 NSS results which were generally very positive. Thanks were recorded to all staff involved in enhancing the student experience and congratulations to the Students’ Union on the excellent rating they received. Work is underway to address issues highlighted such as learning resources and assessment and feedback. It was noted that the questions would be revised and extended for 2017.

Key Performance Indicators: Senate noted an update on its Key Performance Indicators which monitored the core academic activities of the University, benchmarked against similar universities.

New Academic Programmes: As recommended by the Programmes & Partnerships Approval Committee, Senate agreed to grant full and final approval to the following academic programmes from 2017/18:

New variants to BSc Hons Economics and BSc Hons Economics and Politics to commence in 2017/18:

  • BSc (Hons) Economics with Placement;
  • BSc (Hons) Economics with Study Year Abroad;
  • BSc (Hons) Economics with Study Abroad and Placement;
  • BSc (Hons) Economics and Politics with Placement;
  • BSc (Hons) Economics and Politics with Study Year Abroad;
  • BSc (Hons) Economics and Politics with Study Abroad and Placement.

New MSc programmes:

  • MSc Electronic Systems Design with exit awards of PGDip and PGCert Electronic Systems Design;
  • MSc, PGDip, PGCert Applied Economics;
  • MSc, PGDip Applied Economics with Banking & Financial Markets;
  • MSc, PGDip Applied Economics with Public Policy;
  • MSc, PGDip Applied Economics with Environmental Policy;
  • MSc, PGDip Applied Economics with Behavioural Science;

(PGDip and PGCert as exit awards only).

Education and Research Strategies: Senate discussed the new Education and Research strategies which would be recommended to Council later in October.

Committee memberships: - Senate appointed Dr Bruce Rayton as Chair of the Programmes & Partnerships Approval Committee until 31 July 2019.
