Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology launches

A new cross-faculty Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CNAN) has been established at the University of Bath, pooling expertise from across the University in this lively scientific field.

Nanoscience and nanotechnology are exciting areas of research with applications across many different scientific disciplines.

Across the University there is much relevant expertise within faculties and departments and the formation of the centre will make nanoscience and nanotechnology research at University of Bath more effective.

Pooling expertise and sharing equipment and knowledge will increase efficiency and co-ordination, enhance training opportunities and develop new collaborations and research partnerships.

More than 30 academics from the Faculties of Science and Engineering and Design will be involved in the centre across nine departments, including Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Biology & Biochemistry, Pharmacy & Pharmacology, Architecture & Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electronic & Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

Dr Daniel Wolverson, co-director of CNAN, said: "We’re very excited about launching the new Centre, which will promote the University of Bath’s research in nanoscience and nanotechnology and will provide a gateway for those interested in working with us. It spans departmental and faculty boundaries and puts the emphasis on the shared interests and expertise of world-leading researchers in nine departments.”

The centre will officially launch with an event at the University on Wednesday December 14, including a keynote lecture from Professor Jeremy Blaumberg, Director of the Nanophotonics Centre at the University of Cambridge, who will speak about how to see individual atoms and molecules using nanotechnology.

Staff and students can register for the launch event via the CNAN website: http://www.bath.ac.uk/groups/centre-for-nanoscience-and-nanotechnology/
