Update from Senate - 5 April 2017

The following issues were discussed at the recent meeting of Senate.

Update - The Vice-Chancellor gave a report on key issues for the University. It was noted that recruitment was about to begin again for the role of Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International & Doctoral).

Academic Years - Senate gave approval for the revision and assessment days for academic year 2017/18 and for the broad pattern of the academic year 2018/19.

Boards of Studies – Senate approved the calendar of meetings of Boards of Studies for 2017/18.

Postgraduate Research Ombudsman - Senate approved the renaming of the Postgraduate Research Ombudsman to ‘University Independent Adviser for Postgraduate Research Students’.

New Programmes – Senate gave full and final approval to a new BSc Economics and Mathematics with Study Year Abroad and a BSc Economics and Mathematics with Placement and Study Abroad, subject to a few minor amendments by the Chair of PAPAC.

Student Statistics – Senate noted reports on degree outcomes and retention rates, and also Student Academic Appeals and Reviews, Student Disciplinary Statistics, Fitness to Practise Statistics and Fitness to Study Statistics for 2015/16.

Proposal from Students’ Union on Refugees – Senate discussed a proposal from the Students’ Union regarding support for refugees and asylum seekers, and the many activities already being undertaken by the University. It was agreed to promulgate these initiatives more widely. Professor Peter Lambert would also work with the Students’ Union to consider the proposals in more detail, and to bring a report back to the June meeting.

Honorary Titles – Senate approved the conferment of the title of Honorary Professor on Professor Jon Dilworth and Professor Tess Ridge.
