Bidding farewell to Diane Aderyn

A hundred and fifty colleagues, past and present, gathered in the Claverton Rooms to bid farewell to Diane Aderyn at the end of 24 years with the University. One year short, as Diane pointed out, of her 25 year staff recognition award.

Professor Bernie Morley, Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Provost, said: “This is in some ways an easier farewell than others as I know Diane so well, and yet the hardest as I don’t want her to go.

“Diane has been at the centre of making the University what it is today, she was instrumental in securing a £104m loan which enabled us to grow our research, building on our teaching to create the research intensive University we are today.

“I have always appreciated the aura of calm she spreads in meetings, her approach is ‘this is possible, let’s think how we can make this happen’, she makes what can be tough decision-making easy.

“I will miss her as a colleague, but also as a friend”.

Diane added: “When I arrived in 1993, 8 West was being built and as I leave the new School of Management building is in planning; if you stay long enough everything comes around.

“I feel very privileged to have been a part of the University. I strongly believe higher education has the ability to transform the lives of those who come into contact with it and research drives the development of a civilized society.

“I would like to thank everyone I have worked with and will remember you very fondly.

“My husband is also retiring on the same day and we plan to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before - in our motor home, if not a spaceship.”

Bernie presented Diane with gifts from her colleagues: a book of photos from her time here, maps of their first planned cycle trip along the Loire valley and a set of cycle panniers for the trip, along with a book of messages, flowers and bubbly.

Diane’s last day at the University will be 18 August.
