Dr Robert Allen, Research Associate in Mech Eng

Dear Colleagues,

As you may be aware from reports in local and national media, Dr Robert Allen, a Research Associate in Mechanical Engineering, was swept off rocks in Cornwall on Monday 4 September along with his younger brother Charles.

Charles was found in the sea near Treyarnon Bay on Monday afternoon but later died in hospital. Robert’s body has now been found.

Our thoughts are with Robert’s partner and parents at this very difficult time.

Robert was an outstanding young academic researcher in the field of 3D printing. Enormously generous with his time and skills, he supported many students and colleagues in the design and delivery of their projects while simultaneously pursuing his own world-leading research.

His enthusiasm, depth of knowledge and respect for his field was inspiring. All of us who had the privilege to work with him and learn from him will carry some of that spirit forward with us into the future.

I know that this will affect Robert’s many colleagues and friends on campus and there is a range of support you can call on:

  • If you are a member of staff, counselling support is available from the Staff Counselling Service.
  • The Chaplaincy staff are happy to talk with anyone who has been affected, in total confidence. Please email chaplaincy@bath.ac.uk or Nigel Rawlinson. There is usually a chaplain available from 10am till 5pm on week days; please feel free to drop in for a chat.
  • If you are a student, counselling support is available by emailing the Student Health & Wellbeing Team: listening@bath.ac.uk

Thank you.
