Safety advice for cycling downhill

Travelling by cycle is healthy, cheap and sustainable and the University is keen to encourage staff and students to consider it as a regular transport option.

There have been two recent serious accidents involving people cycling down Bathwick Hill, with others reported on Widcombe Hill.

If you plan to cycle down steep hills, please:

  1. Limit your speed
  2. Take the centre of the lane
  3. Brake early and not hard
  4. Look ahead

For further advice, please read Cyclescheme’s guide on how to cycle down hills.

The University has implemented a number of arrangements to actively support students and staff cycling including the University’s tax free cycle lease scheme and there is more information on cycle routes to and from campus and on-campus bike storage and provisions for cyclists.
