Guidance for staff on UCU industrial action

Dear colleagues,

You will be aware that, due to a dispute regarding the future of the USS pension scheme, UCU balloted its membership for industrial action and has a mandate to progress.

We are hopeful that discussions at national level will provide a resolution and we are also keen to remain engaged in local discussions regarding this important issue.

However, the current situation is that UCU has called a series of strikes on the dates set out below and continuous action short of a strike termed ‘work to contract’.

Further to the strike action on Thursday 22 to Friday 23 February, the University has also been notified by UCU of the following further days of industrial action:

Strike action to run discontinuously as follows:

  • 3 days from Monday 26 February 2018 – Wednesday 28 February 2018
  • 4 days from Monday 5 March 2018 – Thursday 8 March 2018
  • 5 days from Monday 12 March 2018 – Friday 16 March 2018.

Alongside this Action Short of a Strike (ASOS) to run continuously from Thursday 22 February 2018 to “no later than” Tuesday 19 June 2018 (which is the date that the strike ballot ceases to be effective).

Please see a number of questions and answers as Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to give you information on key matters in relation to the UCU industrial action. I strongly urge you to read this in full.

If you have any questions which are not answered by the FAQ, please contact your HR Business Partner or Peter Eley.

Kind regards,

Richard Brooks
Director of Human Resources
