Uni welcomes Commercial Director

Tom Britten will take up the role of Commercial Director in March.

The new role will lead the development of our commercial services to create value and income that strengthens our investment in research and education.

Reporting to the President and Vice-Chancellor, the role will have direct management responsibility for accommodation, hospitality & security and executive education.

Tom joins us from the University of Warwick where he was responsible for managing and developing its commercial businesses, and launched its University Awards to celebrate achievement across the organisation.

Prior to Warwick, Tom graduated from Newcastle University and pursued a career in retail which included nearly 20 years at Tesco with roles in retail services, Tesco Bank, Tesco.com and latterly as Managing Director of Tesco Mobile Europe.

Outside work Tom is a regular squash player and captains a club team.

Tom said: “My recent experiences have given me a passion for and love of Higher Education. I’m thrilled to be joining the University as Commercial Director and looking forward to meeting new colleagues. It’s a fantastic institution and in the coming months I’ll be focused on listening and learning about the opportunities and challenges.”

Professor Dame Glynis Breakwell, President and Vice-Chancellor, said: “I am very much looking forward to working with Tom. He has the skills and experience necessary to shape and drive a dynamic commercial strategy that supports our academic vision and strategic objectives.”
