REF 2021 panels announced

The four UK HE funding bodies have announced the first Research Excellence Framework (REF) panel members, with eight colleagues from the University chosen to take part.

The REF assesses the quality of research in UK higher education institutions, with expert sub-panels carrying out reviews in 34 subject areas under the guidance of four main panels.

Over 4,000 nominations were made for roles across the panels.

Members were selected to ensure that each one includes expertise across the main fields of research within the subject area, and its membership “collectively commands the respect of the relevant research and wider communities”.

The panels develop detailed criteria as the first stage of REF 2021 before the assessment phase, when they evaluate the submissions made by institutions.

The following colleagues have been appointed for both phases:

  • Chemistry sub-panel: Professor Matthew Davidson (interdisciplinary adviser)
  • Engineering sub-panel: Professor Patrick Keogh
  • Business and Management Studies sub-panel: Professor Ian Tonks
  • Main panel C: Chair: Professor Jane Millar

Colleagues appointed to join the panels for the assessment phase are:

  • Physics sub-panel: Professor Alison Walker
  • Mathematical Sciences sub-panel: Professor Mark Haskins
  • Social Work and Social Policy sub-panel: Professor Joe Devine
  • Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism sub-panel: Professor Dylan Thompson
