Press Release - 04 November 2004

New safety measures regarding drains

The University of Bath's Safety, Health and Environment Unit has put in place steps to help prevent future combustions of the type which took place in a drain under Wessex House in June.

The chances of such a combustion happening were already small but the new measures have minimised the risk. They include:

In future all drainage chamber covers will lifted periodically to allow pressure relief. Air in the chambers will be monitored from time to time to check that no solvent vapour build-up occurs.

Having taken these actions, the University is now satisfied that the risk level is now "very remote".
