Press Release - 17 December 2004

Strong international ranking for University of Bath

The University of Bath has been ranked in the top 40 in a list of the best universities in Europe published today.

The University was ranked the 38th best in Europe and the 15th best in Britain, narrowly missing a place in the top 100 universities in the world with a placing of 103.

Only 30 British universities made it into the list of the top 200 universities in the world.

The ranking was compiled by the Times Higher Educational Supplement from surveys of 1,300 leading academics in 88 countries. They were asked to name the best institutions in the fields they felt knowledgeable about.

The table also includes data on research citations, student-staff ratios, success in attracting international students and the international reputation of academics.

The list is headed by Harvard University (US), University of California, Berkeley (US), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (US), California Institute of Technology (US), Oxford University (UK) and Cambridge University (UK).

“We are delighted to have been ranked so highly in a prestigious list of the world’s best universities,” said Professor Glynis Breakwell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bath.

“This confirms the University’s place among the leading research-based universities in the UK, and that we have developed a strong international reputation for excellence.”

“We hope our continued efforts will help cement this position, and improve it further in the future.”
