Press Release - 03 December 2004

Combe Down Stone Mines – precautionary work

We have obtained the following press statement from BANES

YESTERDAY (Thursday, December 2) mining engineers working to stabilise an area of the Combe Down Stone Mines, discovered a small, recently-collapsed area of the mines.

In order for this area to be investigated and a stabilisation solution planned, Bath & North East Somerset Council will be closing a stretch of one lane to the west of the North Road/Ralph Allen Drive junction – this will be operated by temporary traffic lights installed today (Friday, December 3).

Letters are in the process of being delivered to local residents in the area to inform them of the lane closure.

Early investigations have revealed the collapse is under the highway and the grass verge area to the far side of Firs Field and is not under any property. The collapse is only underground and has not affected the surface.
