Lecturers receive medal for co-operation with Slovakian university

Two lecturers in the Department of Economics and International Development have been awarded the prestigious Memorial Medal by the University of Economics in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Colin Lawson and Adrian Winnett have received the award in recognition of their contribution to co-operation between the two universities over the last 16 years.

Colin and Adrian gave invited plenary presentations at a recent international conference on economic growth in Slovakia, at which they were presented with the medals by the Dean of the Faculty of National Economy, Professor Rudolf Sivak.

Colin and Adrian have assisted the Faculty in developing activities which have helped to inform the accession process of Slovakia to the European Union (EU).

These have involved Foreign and Commonwealth Office training programmes and many joint EU research projects and student exchanges.

They now intend to develop further research collaboration within the EU's Framework 7 programme.

Slovakia has become one of the economically most successful of the 'new' EU states. It has high quality academic institutions and offers enormous potential for educational co-operation.
