PhD student wins top ceramics award

Jon Gittings, a PhD student from the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has received the Potteries Mechanics Institute's (PMI) PhD Bursary Award for 2005.

The £2,000 award is given to students with the ability and opportunity to travel abroad to further their career but who cannot afford to get abroad to achieve their goals.

Jon was first nominated by Professor Ron Stevens, a ceramicist at the University who helped him with his PhD on the fabrication and properties of novel open porous calcium phosphate bioceramics, before successfully presenting his work to the PMI board.

He was presented with the cheque in October, and will use the money to travel to Bangkok where he will demonstrate laboratory work related to his PhD at the Thai Ministry of Technology in Bangkok, as well as guest lecturing at Thai universities.

He will also travel to Nanyang University in Singapore later next year to continue his research while also undertaking some lecturing.
