IDEALS project launched in Zambia

The Department of Sports Development is working with UK Sport and in partnership with five other universities (Stirling, Loughborough, Durham, Northumbria and UWIC) on the IDEALS (International Development through Excellence and Leadership in Sport) in Zambia Project.

The aim of the project is to address some of the problems in Africa - such as education, economy and health issues - through sport.

Prime Minister Tony Blair said, "I would like to express my support for the new initiative between UK Sport and six universities, to support the development of sport in Zambia. Many of you will know that one of the British Government's highest priorities for 2005 - and beyond - is to achieve real progress in addressing the problems that Africa faces. I believe there is a significant role for sport in addressing Africa's problems."

Up to eight students from the University of Bath will have the opportunity to visit Zambia in the summer of 2006, to help out on the ground, through the delivery and coaching of sports activities to disadvantaged children. They will help, for example, to address issues related to the problems of HIV and AIDS.

Any students or staff from across the University interested in getting involved, or knowing more, are invited to email Mike Callan, Sports Development Manager
