Press Release - 08 November 2005

University/QinetiQ link will bring new research into marketplace

University of Bath researchers and students are to get the chance to turn their work into commercial success by using the world-class facilities offered by QinetiQ, the defence technology and security company.

Under a new agreement announced today (8 November 2005), Bath becomes one of seven universities which will swap facilities and expertise with QinetiQ. The initial focus at Bath will be in the areas of physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, IT and management.

Joint projects will be set up and QinetiQ will provide advice on understanding markets, identifying the needs of customers and bidding for major contracts, as well as providing access to its facilities.

The seven universities were all chosen because of their strong record of innovation in physical sciences. They are: Bath, Cardiff, Imperial College, Lancaster, Oxford, Southampton and Surrey.

Staff at Bath interested in developing closer links with QinetiQ should contact Jon Hunt on 01225 384497 or email j.hunt@bath.ac.uk.

The agreements were announced at the Royal Society in London by speakers including Sir John Chisholm, QinetiQ’s Executive Chairman. Sir John said: “Collaboration between business and universities is at the heart of the UK government’s innovation agenda and has a positive impact on commercial success.

“This cooperation creates an environment where innovations in the physical sciences – which have produced technologies such as the silicon chip and the microwave – can be taken to market more effectively.”

Kevin Edge, the University of Bath’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor in charge of research, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for the University to build on our strong record of research and turning that research into commercial opportunities.

“We are pleased that QinetiQ believes that the University is one of the UK’s major centres of innovation in science and technology.

“We look forward to sharing facilities and staff with QinetiQ in order to carry out research that will benefit society as a whole in the near future.”
