Press Release - 10 February 2005

TheatreWorks - a new arts initiative for Wiltshire & Swindon

TheatreWorks is a brand new organisation set up to develop and support theatre in the Wiltshire and Swindon region. Deryck Newland, the newly appointed Director, has recently started in post and is based at University of Bath in Swindon's Oakfield campus.

The aim of TheatreWorks is to raise the profile of current theatre activity, to bring organisations together to develop a strategic vision, and to assist theatre practitioners to make and present work locally. Additionally, opportunities for training at all levels will be identified.

Central to TheatreWorks is the desire to see partnerships flourish so that more theatre is made, presented and seen by more people in Wiltshire and Swindon. Initiatives will bring together all the major theatre venues and companies currently operating in Swindon and Wiltshire as well as other partners in education and the local authorities.

Director Deryck Newland says, "I am tremendously excited by the prospect of being able to offer theatre a real kick-start in Wiltshire and Swindon and to build on the fantastic work already going on across the region by demonstrating that TheatreWorks!"

This new initiative is the result of a bid by Arts Council South West to improve theatre infrastructure across the whole south west region. This particular post is funded by Arts Council, ICIA, Wiltshire County Council and Swindon Borough Council. TheatreWorks is hosted by University of Bath's ICIA (Institute of Contemporary and Interdisciplinary Arts) which is committed to playing an active part in the long term development of the arts in the area as part of the University exciting plans for Arts education in the area.

Director Deryck Newland brings to TheatreWorks a wealth of experience. His work for Wiltshire College has given him invaluable experience at starting new activity and organisations. Six years ago he established the very successful Arc Theatre Trowbridge based on the College campus, and continues his role as Artistic Director alongside his new role. He also set up the College's full time Performing Arts courses, offering some of the best facilities for students in the region. Deryck began his career in the arts by setting up his own Theatre in Education Company, Tandem Theatre in the 80's. He has directed youth productions and run youth theatres and festivals at Bristol Old Vic and Theatre Royal Bath in the past.

Deryck is inviting anyone wishing to get involved or to be kept informed of TheatreWorks' plans to contact him by email on D.K.Newland@bath.ac.uk or call 01793 328762. TheatreWorks is c/o ICIA, University of Bath in Swindon, Oakfield Campus, Marlowe Avenue, Swindon, SN3 3JR.
