University of Bath welcomes grant increase

The University of Bath has welcomed today’s announcement that its funding for research and teaching will be increased by 9.3 per cent to £42.3 million in the next academic year.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England has estimated that the University’s total resource from its grant and also tuition fee income will be around £49.9 million, an increase of 8.1 per cent on the previous year.

The University believes that an increase in Funding Council grant of this level is essential in order to maintain the quality of its teaching and research, following the fall in the amount given by the Government to universities to teach students during the eighties and nineties. The amount given for each student fell from £8,000 to £5,000 in the 1990s.

The research part of the Funding Council grant – around £16 million – represents a rise of about 20 per cent. This reflects the importance of the research carried out at the University, which includes work on:

The new grant will apply from the beginning of the next academic year, in August 2005.
