Death of librarian Tony Holbrook announced

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Tony Holbrook, Faculty Librarian for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University, who died this morning, Tuesday 22 March, at the age of 58.

Tony Holbrook joined the University of Bath Library as an Assistant Librarian in 1975, after graduating in social sciences from Hull University and studying librarianship at Leeds Polytechnic. A subject librarian to the core, Tony remained widely esteemed by the academic and research staff with whom he worked over three decades.

Tony Holbrook’s great professional strengths were his thorough knowledge of the literature of the social sciences and his highly developed sense of practical librarianship. Tony served for a decade as the Honorary Librarian for the Royal Bath & West Society, with distinction. He was the University’s specialist in charge of the European Documentary Collection of EEC information for nearly twenty years

His lasting professional memorial will be the two scholarly bibliographies that he published: Tidal Barrages in the Severn Estuary: a Bibliography appeared in four editions, whilst Lundy Island: a Bibliography was published in 2000. As a colleague Tony Holbrook was personable and fun, regularly organising staff social outings and being first to join any party. In his earlier years he loved to play football and cricket and he remained an avid sports fan all his life.

Our condolences go to his wife Alison Holbrook, also a professional librarian, and to Tony’s children, Alistair and Ruth, who survive him.

A funeral service will be held at Claverton Church and Haycombe, probably on Monday 4th or Tuesday 5th of April. When further details of the funeral arrangements are known they will be posted to the University’s Website.
