Pro-Vice-Chancellor wins fellowship to examine HEI collaborative research

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Kevin Edge, has been awarded a Leadership Foundation Fellowship to examine the best ways to tackle challenges in setting up and running joint-university collaborative research activities.

The Foundation will give the University a grant to employ a project officer from March this year to help carry out the research.

This research will focus on the South-West Research Alliance, initiated by the Universities of Bath, Bristol and Exeter with the support of the Higher Education Regional Development Association-South West.

The research will focus on the cultural and organisational aspects of the three universities and how they affect their collaboration within the Alliance. It will also look at the track record of similar enterprises in the UK and abroad. The research is important because partnerships such as the Alliance are fundamental to establishing large research centres that are internationally excellent and can attract funding.

"HEIs must be able to demonstrate that the organisation of their research activity ensures that resources are channelled to their best researchers," said Professor Edge in his grant application. "The promotion of strategic alliances between HEIs at regional level, focused on the development of existing areas of research strength and the fostering of new areas of collaborative research, is arguably one of the most compelling and effective ways of meeting this challenge."
