Pharmacy college
Bath & West of England College of Chemistry and Pharmacy

Press Release - 18 April 2005

Local people asked for help in search for history of pharmacy in Bath

Local people are being asked to help in the search for information about the Bath and West College of Chemistry and Pharmacy which was founded in the city in 1907.

The College was based at 6 Cleveland Place East, just along from Cleveland Bridge, and marked the start of pharmacy research and education in the city.

It stayed there for 22 years until it moved to Bristol, becoming part of the Merchant Venturers’ College and later the College of Advanced Technology, which, in 1966, moved to Claverton Down and became the University of Bath.

Researchers in the University’s Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology are preparing to celebrate 100 years of pharmacy education and research, and so would like to hear from anyone who might be able to tell them more about the place where it all began.

They are planning a series of events and activities to celebrate their centenary that will take place in 2007.

"The celebration of our centenary will be a very exciting time for all involved in the department,” said Professor Anthony Smith, Head of the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology.

“Pharmacy research has come a long way over the last 100 years, not least in the city of Bath where we can now celebrate the fact that we have one of the best pharmacy and pharmacology departments in the country."

Anyone with any information should contact Anthony Smith on 01225 383 101, e-mail: or write to: Professor Anthony Smith, Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, University of Bath, Bath, BA2 7AY.
