Bath rises six places in Guardian league table

The University of Bath has risen six places in The Guardian University Guide 2005 league table, published today, 19 April. The University is rated 12th out of 122 universities and colleges; most of those rated higher are larger institutions and Oxford comes top. In 2004, Bath rose from 26th to 18th place.

The Guardian's rating system differs from the Times' in that it places a greater emphasis on teaching rather than research. Its criteria include: teaching quality assessment, entry qualifications, spend per student, student:staff ratio, and student destinations.

In the subject tables, Bath is first in two subjects: Community Studies and Social Work and in Sports Science. It is in the top ten in six other subjects: Biosciences (seventh) Business Studies (fourth); Materials Engineering (seventh); Mechanical Engineering (fourth); Pharmacology and Pharmacy (eighth); and Psychology (ninth).

The Times' league table is due to be published next month. Bath was placed 11th in the 2004 Times league table.
