Leading scientists debate GM organisms

An open debate by leading scientists on the controversial topic of genetically modified organisms will be held at the University of Bath on Monday 16 May.

Speakers at the debate will include Dr Doug Parr, Head of Science, Greenpeace; Dr Sue Mayer, GeneWatch UK; Paul Rooke, Head of Policy, Agricultural Industries Confederation; and Professor Rod Scott, from the University’s Department of Biology & Biochemistry.

The four will each give a short talk to put their different opinions and then take questions from the audience. Members of the public are invited to the free event, at 5.15pm in the University Hall, but should get tickets beforehand by calling 01225 384607 or emailing: Questions should be submitted by email before 16 May.

The event is suitable for students and school pupils, and University staff will be happy to liaise with teachers.

This is the latest event organised by the University’s Department of Chemistry in its Millennium Lectures series. Previous speakers have included fertility expert Lord Robert Winston and TV presenter Johnny Ball.
