Internal News - 16 May 2005

New look News pages to launch soon

The internal news pages on the University’s site will be relaunched with a new redesign and structure in the next few days.

The change is being introduced to create space for more links on the home page, and make finding news and information items simpler.

In the past year the Press Office has recruited more staff and has been able to issue more internal news items and press releases on the University’s internal site. The new system will make it easier to access this information.

It will allow users to click topic headings such as the University’s business activities, its research, its links with the community and international links, and see items on that topic alone. These are areas that are stressed as important in University strategy documents.

New look news pages

As well as introducing new links, the redesigned homepage includes all existing home page information, and easy access to information pages.

The new look will feature a redesign which has a contemporary feel, with a squarer look to maximise the space available. Its XML technology simplifies updating the site and can automatically create print-ready pages, page viewing statistics and RSS feeds, where users can get new items on their screens without needing to go to the homepage itself.

The new system has been successfully trialled among a focus group and was approved by Executive earlier this month.

After its launch the Department of Marketing and Communications will welcome all suggestions and consider if further changes to the new system are needed.

We hope you will enjoy using the new site.
