New developments at Medical Centre

On 1 May 2005 the Medical Centre became an independent NHS general medical practice.

The practice and the University have been working to achieve this for some time. The majority of British universities have already made their medical centres independent.

This move will enable the practice to focus its services on the University and to become a viable health service for the future. Its aims are to become a one stop shop for all medical services to students and staff..

The delivery of general medical services will continue to be based at Quarry House. The practice has signed a five year lease with the University to secure the premises for the medium term. The practice is committed to helping the University secure medical services on site for the benefit of the University community.

It will be business as usual for the vast majority of patients who visit the centre but you may start to see some exciting changes. There is now an automated patient check-in system – so no more long queues to sign in!

All students, staff and their families (who live within the city of Bath) are welcome and encouraged to join the practice where they can receive a full range of services including travel advice and immunisations, diabetic and asthma reviews, cervical screening, minor surgery and sexual health screening.

Mark Ames, Head of Student Services, is the liaison officer between the Medical Centre and the University. Mark is having monthly meetings with the new Practice Manager, Sue Miles, to ensure the two organisations can continue to work together and support each other. Sue is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Medical Centre and, together with the doctors, will be working closely with the staff and students of the University to ensure that the best possible healthcare services are available for all patients.

If anyone has any queries about the new working arrangements or any questions about the Medical Centre in general please do not hesitate to contact Sue or Mark. (See contact details in left-hand column.)
