Bath chemist is first recipient of new award

A University chemist has won the inaugural Process Chemistry Academic Award which is given by a group of the main pharmaceutical companies in the UK.

Professor Jonathan Williams will receive £12,000 from Pfizer, AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline for his recent work, and he will be presented with the award in Cambridge in December.

The three companies established the award recently as part of their desire to work together in certain areas in a non-competitive way. Their scientists came together to decide who should first receive the new award.

Professor Williams' work has included research into methods which avoid the use of toxic chemicals in the environmentally-friendly preparation of drug molecules.
